An abandoned petrol station
My Project is about the abandoned petrol stations and tries to reconsider their function and relation to the community.
In 2011 many petrol stations in Sharjah were closed, following an order from the Sharjah Executive Council. After a period of time some of these petrol stations were reactivated under a different name and management, while the others are still unused to this day.
I set out on a search for these abandoned stations to find out all the changes that have occurred to them since their closure:
Some of these petrol stations have become parking areas for many of the people living or working nearby. Other petrol stations have been occupied by fast food restaurants where the petrol station’s structure has been used as a parking place to order the food.
Many of the stations’ entry and exit points have been sealed, and so they cannot be accessed or used by the public. I try to recreate possible activities for these spaces adding objects and simulated activities in the space.
All these images are like a future prediction of what could happen to petrol stations if UAE fuel resources would run out.
Many of the objects that I have found and used as still life were found in the petrol station.
